Tieguanyin: The Essence of Oolong Tea

Tieguanyin, also known as green tea, is a renowned Chinese tea celebrated for its distinctive semi-fermentation process and captivating aroma. Originating in Fujian Province, China, it later spread to regions like Guangdong and Taiwan. According to legend, its name stems from a tea farmer who, engrossed in his work, accidentally produced tea with a unique aroma after forgetting the fermentation time of the leaves.

Oolong tea, including Tieguanyin, contains caffeine that can help refresh the mind and improve concentration. Its tea polyphenols and other components offer antioxidant properties, aiding in combating free radicals. Moreover, the polyphenols facilitate digestion and stimulate appetite.

Tieguanyin stands as an exemplary variety within the realm of Oolong tea.

Exploring the Delights of Tieguanyin, a Timeless Oolong Classic

Tieguanyin is a renowned and beloved variety of Chinese Oolong tea, primarily cultivated in Anxi County, Fujian Province, China. With origins dating back to the Qing Dynasty, it boasts a rich history spanning nearly 300 years. The name "Iron Goddess of Mercy" derives from its tea leaves' appearance and quality. "Iron" denotes the iron-like hue of the leaves, while "Guanyin" signifies its delicate fragrance akin to the Guanyin Bodhisattva in Buddhism.

Nurtured in Fujian's mild climate, Tieguanyin leaves are thick and vibrant dark green. When brewed, the tea yields a golden, amber-colored liquor with a naturally robust orchid aroma. Its taste is smooth and sweet, distinguishing it as one of the finest among Oolong teas.

A Lasting Fragrance in Seven Steeps

Tieguanyin is renowned for its unique fragrance, often described as "lingering through seven steeps". Its aroma profiles vary, encompassing orchid, osmanthus, and fruity notes. The dry leaves of Tieguanyin are sandy green and lustrous, tightly curled into spirals. When brewed, it yields a bright golden liquor with a clear base. The taste is smooth, with a quick return of sweetness, accompanied by a distinct "rhythm" where the tea's sweetness and fragrance unfold delicately on the palate.

A Tea Treasure Worth Savoring

This Tieguanyin originates from Anxi, Fujian, picked from the top buds of tea trees. Following meticulous processes including withering, shaking, firing, rolling, and baking, it brews into a pure tea soup in just 20 seconds with hot water at approximately 95℃. This tea is remarkably resilient to brewing, yielding 8-10 cups of robust and aromatic tea per serving.

Brewing a Delicate Cup of Tea

Select a ceramic or glass cup and place the tea leaves into your tea set. It's recommended to use 5-7 grams of tea leaves per 150 ml of water. Use hot water around 95℃ to lightly moisten the tea leaves first, then discard the water. This process is known as "washing the tea". Pour hot water again and adjust the steeping time to your taste preference, typically 20-30 seconds.
