Rou Gui Tea: An Exquisite Rock Tea
Rock tea, also known as Wuyi rock tea, is a cherished variety originating from the scenic Wuyi Mountain in Fujian Province, China. Revered for its distinctive mineral-rich taste, aroma, and meticulous production methods, rock tea has a storied history dating back to the Tang Dynasty. However, its cultivation and refinement flourished during the Song Dynasty in the Wuyi Mountain region.
Rock tea's defining characteristic is its unique "rock charm," derived from absorbing minerals from Wuyi Mountain's rocks during its growth. This results in a diverse aroma profile encompassing floral, fruity, milky, and mineral notes. The dry leaves are tightly knotted, showcasing dark hues, while the brewed tea exudes an orange or golden hue. Its taste is rich and full-bodied, with some varieties offering a subtle bitterness that gives way to a sweet and refreshing aftertaste.
In Chinese tea culture, rock tea holds a special place as an elegant beverage that nurtures both body and mind. Its consumption is considered a ritual that fosters well-being. Beyond China, rock tea is celebrated globally for its unique flavors and perceived health benefits, making it a favored choice in traditional tea ceremonies and everyday indulgence.
Rou Gui Tea: A Culinary Masterpiece
Originating from Mazhen Peak within Wuyi Mountain, Rou Gui tea boasts over a century of cultivation history as a premier rock tea variety. It is characterized by tall plants with dense foliage and thick, fleshy leaves that demonstrate robust fertility. Harvested during the sunny days leading up to the Qingming Festival, only the top two or three leaves are selected from the tea bushes. Following meticulous processes such as withering, oxidation, rolling, and charcoal firing, Rou Gui tea achieves its renowned depth of flavor and aromatic complexity.
Charcoal firing, an intricate step in Rou Gui tea's production, enhances its fragrance and imparts layers of nuanced flavors. Known for its mild taste and rich aroma, Rou Gui tea is prized for its appetite-stimulating properties and comforting qualities, making it ideal for consumption after meals or during cold weather to promote warmth and well-being.
Appreciating Rou Gui Tea
Charcoal-fired Rou Gui tea originates directly from Wuyi Mountain's pristine environment, where it undergoes a unique preparation method that includes withering and rolling before being brewed with approximately 95°C water for just 20 seconds, yielding a pot of impeccably mellow tea. Each serving boasts exceptional durability, capable of brewing 8-10 cups of aromatic tea.
Brewing Excellence
For the optimal tea experience, select a ceramic or glass cup and infuse 3-5 grams of Rou Gui tea leaves per 150 ml of water. Use hot water around 95-100°C to lightly moisten the leaves, then discard this initial infusion, known as "washing the tea." Add fresh hot water and steep according to personal preference, typically between 20-30 seconds.
